While garden suites were once considered distinct from garage suites, the City of Edmonton has decided to consider them inclusively under the umbrella of “garden suites.” In general, garden suites are approximately the size of an apartment, complete with a sleeping space, living area, kitchen, and bathroom. Some garden suites will include a garage, or garage space, while others will not.

In an attempt to provide residents with affordable housing options and to minimize the impact of a growing population, the City of Edmonton provides Cornerstone Grants, which are sanctioned under the Affordable Housing Plan. Should you choose to rent out your home addition to a low-income resident, or tenants for five years after the construction is complete, you could receive a grant of up to $20,000 to fund your project.
